Departmental (Generic) MATH M118 Syllabus

Course Description: 3 credits. Topics include logic, set theory, permutations, combinations, simple probability, conditional probability and independence, Bayes' theorem, Bernoulli trials, expected value and standard deviation, normal approximation to a binomial variable, matrix algebra, and Markov Chains.

Prerequisites: Two years of high school algebra as evidenced by MATH 110 or 111, with minimum grade of C-.

Textbook: Finite Mathematics, 2004-05 Edition, by Watt, Hayden-McNeil Publishing Co.

Calculators: Need a scientific calculator (about $12) that performs combinations and permutations.
No graphing calculators or other information storage devices are permitted on tests. This will be enforced on the common final exam.

Tests: Must get prior permission to take make-up test. No make-ups after tests are returned.

Dishonesty: Cheating will result in a minimum penalty of receiving a grade of F in the course

Attendance Policy: This course makes use of the Administrative Withdrawal Policy of IUPUI. A student who does not attend at least 50% of the class meetings during the first month of the semester will be administratively withdrawn from the course at midterm.

No Class: Labor Day, Wed-Fri of Thanksgiving week, Dr. M.L. King Day, and Spring break.

Withdrawal: Last day to withdrawal with a grade of W is Tuesday, November 16, 2004.

Final Exam: All students are required to take the Department Final Exam. You must pass the final exam to pass the course. The final exam is on Saturday, December 11, 2004, 1:00 - 3:00 PM, LE Hall. (Note: this is the weekend before final exam week.)
