We often use sets to explain various concepts in mathematics.
For example, we teach students to add 3 and 4 together by taking
a set of 3 objects and combining it with a set of 4 objects to
make a new set of 7 objects. Hence, 3 + 4 = 7. We also introduce
fractions as "how many parts of the whole are shaded".
Therefore, if we add a set with 1 of 3 objects shaded to a set
with 3 of 4 objects shaded, we get a set with 4 of 7 objects
shaded. But, 1/3 + 3/4 doesn't equal 4/7. If a student in your
pre-algebra class made this observation, how would you respond
(explain the logic of addition with fractions) in this situation?
Below is a space for your thoughts,
including general comments about today's assignment. What was
hard or confusing (or cool)? What would you like to spend extra
time on in class? Do you see how this subject fits in with the
others we have discussed?
