Warming up on...   Induction

This assignment is due before 9 AM, Monday, October 8th, 2007.

Please type your last name and first initial (e.g., Rader, A):

Please type a nickname: (in case your answer gets used in class).

The following questions refer to the material you were to read in preparation to the lesson. Please write a three or four sentence response to each of the questions.

You may change your mind as often as you wish. When you are satisfied with your responses, click the SUBMIT HOMEWORK button at the bottom of this page.

WarmUp questions are worth 4 points.

1.

A wire loop (shown in blue) surrounds a solenoid wound around a wooden bar. If the current in the solenoid (I) increases will there be a current in the blue loop? Which way?

2.

Let's say you take an ordinary wire coathanger and straighten out the hook shaped part that normally hangs over the coatrack. Estimate the maximum magnetic flux through the triangular area that you can achieve in only the Earth's magnetic field (about 5 x 10-5 T)? If you spin the coathanger, will a current flow? Where?

3.

A uniform magnetic field can produce an EMF in a conducting loop if

a) The field changes in magnitude

b) The loop changes position within the field.

c) The the loop rotates within the field

d) The loop is removed from the field

e) The loop changes size.

f) All except b)

g) All except c)

h) All except d)

Below is a space for your thoughts, including general comments about today's assignment. What was hard or confusing (or cool)? What would you like to spend extra time on in class? Do you see how this subject fits in with the others we have discussed?
