The direction of a magnetic field from a straight current can be determined by a version of the "right hand rule" illustrated on page 1071 of our text (Fig. 28-6). Please explain how this "right hand rule" is related to the "right hand rule" that you use to deal with the cross product in equation 28-6. (page 1069).

Estimate the maximum possible magnetic field that could be produced by an electric toaster at a distance of 50 cm.

Hint: Assume the toaster uses 1000 W of electric power all in the form of a single wire operating at 120 V. (You need not worry about the fact that a real toaster uses AC power).

How does the magnetic field of an infinite current carrying wire depend on distance from the wire? Compare to the electric field of a charged wire. Does this suggest any possibilities about, say, a current carrying plane? A very short (pointlike) segment?
