1.

Three swimmers start across a river at the same time. They all swim with the same speed relative to the water. Swimmer A swims in a direction perpendicular to the current. Swimmer B swims slightly upstream along a line which makes an 80 degree angle with the near river bank. Swimmer C swims slightly downstream along a line which makes an 80 degree angle with the near river bank. Which of the three swimmers reaches the other bank first?

2.

The pilot of a small plane is trying to maintain a course due North (relative to the ground). His air speed is 120 miles per hour. There is a 10 mph wind from the East. Determine the direction in which the plane should be pointed to accomplish this.

3.

A 60 mph southwesterly wind, blowing at 30° East of North, has an easterly component of

60 sin60° mph

60 cos30° mph

60 sin30° mph

none of the above.

(Note: A southwesterly wind is one which comes from the southwest and is headed northeast.)
