The following three questions refer to the material you were to read in preparation to the lesson. Questions one and two require you to write a three or four sentence response. Number three is a multiple choice question. Click in the appropriate circle.

1.

The equation for a standing wave on a string is:

Y(x,t) = A*sin(kx)cos(omega*t).

Consider a string of length two meters stretched between two supports and vibrating according to the above equation.  Let k = 2pi/4 m-1omega = 60 s-1, and A = 6 cm.  How many nodes and how many anti nodes are present?

2.

Consider the sound pipe shown, with one end closed and one open (the book calls this a stopped pipe).  Where are the amplitude nodes and antinodes for the lowest frequency (longest wavelength) normal mode of oscillation?

3.

For a normal mode oscillation, the distance between (amplitude) nodes is

1/4 wavelength

1/2 wavelength

1 wavelength

any are possible
