Note: Please reread §2.5 for this assignment, particularly the part titled "Special case: ideal gases in the classical limit" that starts on page 63.

Figure 2.5.1 shows a slice through a "sphere in momentum space." In your own words, please describe what " momentum space." is. Also, please explain in what sense the shape in question is a sphere.

Estimate the area of a square that is "near" the surface (say, within 5 percent). What percentage of the whole area is this? Do the same for a cube. That is, estimate the volume that is within 5% of the surface. Can you do this in four dimensions? 40? 1023?
