Equations 7.9.10 and 7.10.10 are both distribution functions (the Maxwell velocity and speed distribution functions, respectively). Please explain in words what a distribution function is.

Consider the air in our classroom on a typical day. Please estimate the number of nitrogen molecules in the room that have speeds near 60 miles per hour. How about near 600 MPH? 6000 MPH?
