The following questions refer to the material you were to read in preparation to the lesson. Each question requires you to write a paragraph or two in response.

You may change your mind as often as you wish. When you are satisfied with your responses, click the "Submit WarmUp" button at the bottom of this page.

1.

Imagine you are working at an engineering company, and your boss says

"It says here in this magazine that our competitor uses a process in which they dump heat into a huge container of gas, and the gas remains at constant temperature. Is that possible? What would we have to do to do that?"

What do you tell him?

2.

A sample of 1 mole of air is taken from your living room on an average day. We wish to expand that mole of air to twice its original volume. Estimate the change in entropy if the process is done
  1. Adiabatically (without exchanging heat with the environment)
  2. Isothermally (without changing the temperature).
  3. Isobarically (without changing the pressure).

Below is a space for your thoughts, including general comments about today's assignment. What was hard or confusing (or cool)? What would you like to spend extra time on in class? Do you see how this subject fits in with the others we have discussed?
