If children all switched to formal operational thought at the age 12 and no longer needed concrete manipulatives, junior high school might start to look more like college than elementary school. Instead, the transition is gradual and often overlooked in the general chaos of puberty and adolescence. Nevertheless, what changes in behavior might a teacher look for that reveal a new kind of readiness for mathematics?
