"Silly Units Scavenger Hunt"

Due 9:00 AM Friday, September 1, 2000

When my peers in school got tired of trying to memorize all the different units and converting from the units we were given to the units we needed, we used to facetiously refer to BTU's or furlongs per fortnight as antiquated units we were next expecting on an exam.

Describe what use these units might be used to describe.

Express an answer to in the appropriate units (either BTU's or furlongs per fortnight) to each of the following questions:

1. What was the qualifying speed of the most recent polesitter for the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race?
2. What is the energy output of a 60 watt lightbulb that is operated for one hour?

  • It is important to get credit for this answer to a) define all significant terms in the question b) to cite all references for the information you use and c) to explain how you got your answer.

Don't forget to explain your answer as clearly as possible.
