Biology N100
Tips from a former student

Hello my name is Tim Hensley. I will be helping Dr. Marrs this semester with proctoring exams and recording exam scores. As a former student of Biology N100 (Spring 2001) I wanted to offer some helpful tips to current N100 students. These tips helped me do very well in this course. I hope that you can benefit from them too!

1. Come to class! I found much of the material complex and needed the explanation of an expert in the field. Dr. Marrs was very thorough in explaining the course material and I benefited from her knowledge much better than if I tried to learn it on my own or relied on a fellow students notes.
2. Complete all of the "Warm-Ups" and "Good Fors"! This will take a minimal amount of time each week and will be well worth the points when the final accumulation of points are tallied. If you don't know the answers to the Warm-Ups, do a search over the Internet and make an honest effort. This was helpful in stimulating my thought processes and helped me to start thinking about the material for the week. The "Good Fors" were worth the effort because they were bonus points. I often copied and pasted the answers contained within the reading assignments on the Good Fors :o)
3. Print out the Lecture Notes and review them "before" class! I structured my time for this class on a Thursday to Thursday basis. I printed out the lecture notes every Thursday and prepared to learn all of the material by the following Wednesday plus complete all of the Warm-Ups and Good Fors on time. This worked out good for me because I was able to review the notes before class and the lectures reinforced my learning through repetition.
4. Pace Yourself!< e) I can get lecture material from any computer in the world that has Internet access
f) I didn't have to lug the text book around for this class
g) I am one step closer to graduating.
9. Relax and Enjoy the Course! Try and savor your experiences as a student at IUPUI. One day soon your work will be done here and you will be moving on to other challenges. Make the most of each day while a student and enjoy the challenges that it brings. When I started to get tired with studying the course material I tried to make it fun by.... Taking notes with me to the gym, Reviewing Lecture Notes while walking the canal (March-April of course). I tried to pair studying with an activity that I enjoyed. I focused more on the lecture notes over the computer when I got tired of reading the handouts. Sometimes I just had to put the material away and go see a movie or out for pizza with a friend!
10. What tip can you add? At the end of the course maybe you can add another tip that was helpful to you and that you could pass along to the next class of N100 students. After all, we are all in this together. I believe that one of the greatest resources a college student can utilize is the experiences that other students can pass along. Students helping Students! Good Luck to all of you!
