Lesson 5

1. In last lesson's preflight and class, we considered two binary spin systems S1 and S2 which were originally isolated and configured as shown in the top panel of the figure. The systems are then brought into thermal contact with one another. After they reach their equilibrium arrangements, their most probable configuration is as shown in the second part of the figure. We found that (g1g2)max for the most probable equilibrium configuration was about 6800 (using the gaussian approximation).

Suppose each system S1 and S2 have only 1 spin switched from the most likely equilibrium value. (e.g., Let S1 have three up and three down, rather than two up and four down.) Estimate the multiplicity (g1g2) for this configuration.

2. In your own words, describe entropy. What is it a measure of (both in terms of your everyday experience and in terms that the textbook uses)? Why do people think of entropy as a measure of disorder?

3. If two isolated systems at two different temperatures are brought into thermal contact with one another,

Check the correct answer:
a) energy will flow from the hotter to the cooler system
b) the total entropy of the combined system will increase
c) both (a) and (b)
d) none of the above
