What is the "Density of states" (E)? Please explain how it differs from (E), and why it is useful. Also, please explain the function (E). These are all discussed in section 2.5 of Reif.

Suppose you have a system that consists of 100 spin 1/2 particles. Estimate the number of states in which half of the spins are up and half are down. Also, estimate how rapidly this number changes if the number of up spins changes by a small amount.
