WarmUp Exercise #10, 9/13  (Assignment Due 9/15)

This animation simulates a sinusoidally-driven harmonic oscillator with mass, m = 1, spring constant k = 2, and with zero damping (b = 0).   The spring itself is not shown, but the equilibrium position is x = 0.  There are hard wall off screen at x = 100 and x = -100 that will affect the motion of the ball if you have such a large amplitude.  Observe the motion for (a) small ωDD ~ 0.2), (b) large ωDD ~ 8.0), and (c) special ωDD ~ 1.414).

USE THE SET VALUES AND PLAY BUTTON BELOW TO BEGIN AN ANIMATION

  1. Given the resulting motion of the oscillator (consider only the phase and amplitude of the motion shown relative to the driving force): describe those qualitative results for the three cases suggested above.  Try to be as explicit as possible and to specifically match up with your statements about phase and amplitude with the force function.

U-drive: choose the F and ωD:

 F0 =  Note: keep |F|<6  ωD Note: keep ωD< 9

Check this box to see velocity, too   (Once the box is selected/deselected you must reinitialize your choice.)

Answer in the form below, a short answer for each is fine.
