Physics 105 Daily Exercise for Tuesday 11/3 (Due 11/5)

On Tuesday we discussed the a few of the "fine" properties (layers, sunspots, etc) and also the "gross" properties (M, R, T, and L) of Sun.  Like what we did for the planets, we would like to see if stars fit into categories based on their gross features.

  1. Rank according to their temperature, greatest to least with ties in (parentheses): blue supergiant, red supergiant, Sun, red giant, white dwarf, red dwarf, and blue giant.
  2. Rank according to their radius, greatest to least with ties in (parentheses): blue supergiant, red supergiant, Sun, red giant, white dwarf, red dwarf, and blue giant.
  3. All other things being equal, fill in the blank with greater/smaller:  I would expect a higher luminosity from stars with a ___________ temperature.
  4. All other things being equal, fill in the blank with greater/smaller:  I would expect a higher luminosity from stars with a ___________ radius.

NOTE: it is OK if your answers are rough approximations.
