When do we have winter?
The earth's orbit is slightly elliptical. It is closest to the sun at its perihelion. However, we (as well as the rest of the northern hemisphere) have winter when the earth is closest to the sun.
Take a look at this picture. Notice the angle of incidence of the suns rays at different times.
