Why Pursue a Major
in Physics?
Students
who love learning and tackling challenging problems are
natural candidates for a career in physics. Physics
majors are trained in the latest laboratory and
mathematical techniques used by professional physicists
to explore the unknown and to enlarge our knowledge
about the physical world. Physicists are employed by
universities, government laboratories, and private
companies to develop and test new scientific theories,
to invent and use cutting-edge technology, to
collaborate with professionals in other fields (such as
biologists, chemists, engineers, physicians) to work on
global environmental problems, and to impart the joy of
science as teachers and mentors to the next generation
of scientists. Students with a degree in physics are
highly prized in industry and in financial institutions
(such as banks, investment houses, insurance companies)
for their ability to perform complex numerical
calculations by hand and through the use of computers.
In fact, there are many physics graduates employed on
Wall Street for just this purpose. A bachelor’s degree
in physics is excellent preparation for those who wish
to enter graduate school, medical school, or other
professional programs.
What Does IUPUI Have to Offer?
There are four undergraduate degree programs available:
B.S. in Physics
This
is the traditional four-year program best suited to
those students who are strong in mathematics and seek a
broad background in physics. Graduates typically move on
to industry or pursue advanced physics degrees in
graduate school.
Note that students interested in teaching high/middle
school physics must obtain a B.S. in physics in order to
meet the prerequisites for certification in the State of
Indiana. For more information on the secondary education
program at IUPUI, click
here.
B.S. in Biophysics
This
is a new four-year program starting Fall 2007. The focus
of this program is to employ physics techniques in the
analysis of biological structures and processes. This is
an excellent preparation for graduate school or medical
school. Students who enjoy biology and mathematics will
benefit from this program.
B.S. in Physics / B.S. in
Electrical Engineering Dual Degree
This is a four-year program in conjunction with the
School of Engineering. When completed, students obtain
two Purdue bachelor’s degrees making them highly
marketable in industry as an applied
physicist/electrical engineer. Students who are strong
in mathematics and enjoy working with computers and
electronics are best suited for this program.
B.S. in Physics/M.S. in
Mechanical Engineering
This is a very unique five-year program in conjunction
with the School of Engineering. When completed, students
obtain a Purdue bachelor’s degree and a Purdue master’s
degree in only five years, making them highly marketable
in industry as an applied physicist/mechanical engineer.
Students who are strong in mathematics and enjoy
designing and building motors and other mechanical
devices are encouraged to enter this program.
