Is the University open/closed today?
Our Physics 152 Web site is

PREREQUISITE or CO-REQUISITE: MATH 164 (Calculus II). Students
should have an understanding of differential and integral calculus.
But more importantly, a solid background (two years) of algebra is essential.
ORGANIZATION: Each week there are two lectures (M-W), two recitations
(Tu-Th),
and one laboratory (check your schedule for your particular lab day). Most of the submissions for this course are
done electronically. Our web site can be reached from
http://webphysics.iupui.edu/phys152.
Once in our web page, you will see the weekly news page and icon buttons on the left-hand side. The Info
icon button takes you to this page where there are buttons (at the top) to access the Calendar page and
the Credit page (where you can track your progress throughout the semester).
WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS:
Warm-Ups are due by 9 AM (Indianapolis time) on Mondays and Wednesdays and are each worth 3 points. The objective of the Warm-Ups is to introduce you to the new lecture material of the day and get you thinking about it. Partial credit is given for making an honest effort. Click on the yellow button (with the dancer) to view the current Warm-Up. You will submit your answers online to the IUPUI Webphysics server.
NOTE: Whenever you make
an electronic submission to our (IUPUI) website, you
will receive a Thank You or similar message. If you do not receive this message, something
went wrong and we did NOT obtain your submission!
Homework assignments are due by 9 AM (Indianapolis time) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You will submit your answers online to the the University of Texas (UT) server.
The UT
server assigns 10 points per problem. From the Calendar page you can access
sample
homework sets with numerical solutions. These sets are there for you to check
your procedure. Note that in a few instances, UT uses slightly different values than our
textbook/course for the basic physical constants. Check their information page for their
particular values. Also you must read the
instructions which
contains important information about how the UT server grades your submittals (particularly
the multiple choice problems).
The homework need not be submitted all at once. However, only the homework submitted
BEFORE 9 AM (Indianapolis time) of the appropriate day (Tu-Th) will count toward your grade.
Although you may be able to
submit homework after it is due, this
late homework will not be contribute toward your final grade!
In class, we will not have sufficient time to cover all the problems,
so be ready to ask questions about what you
did not understand. You will be able to download the solutions (PDF)
for the homework at the University of Texas website
after 9 AM on the day it is due. Use
menu item 2.2 in the
Student Menu, 'Pick Up Solutions'. You will need Adobe
Acrobat Reader (free) to print both
the homework assignments and to read the solutions.
RECITATIONS: typically begin with an instructor explaining the confusing or difficult parts of the homework due that day. The remaining time will be spent in groups of 2 to 4 students solving new problems at the whiteboards located around the Lecture Hall. Several student mentors and instructors will be available for help as needed. Students are urged to attend all recitation sessions and to work all assigned whiteboard problems -- these problems are representative of what you'll see on tests! Recitation attendance will be assigned the following points (added to your homework score):
| 25-26 sessions | 10 pts |
| 23-24 sessions | 9 pts |
| 20-22 sessions | 8 pts |
| 17-19 sessions | 7 pts |
| 15-16 sessions | 6 pts |
| 12-14 sessions | 5 pts |
| less than 12 | 0 pts |
LABORATORY: The "gloved hand" button takes you to the Lab page. Each week you should download the weekly Lab procedure and its Prep assignment. Study the procedure and complete the Prep assignment before entering the lab. Points will be given for your Lab Prep and your Lab Report.
EXAMS: There will be three 1-hour tests and a comprehensive 2-hour final exam. All exams are closed-book/closed-notes. A formula sheet with physical constants will be provided. Only basic scientific calculators may be used. Graphing calculators, calculators that are capable of storing significant quantities of text, calculators that can manipulate symbolic expressions, and calculators with infrared communications capability are not permitted. If you are unsure about a calculator you plan to use, please check with the instructor. PDAs and small computers are all prohibited. No cell phones, MP3 players, or other personal electronics of any kind may be used during exams.
MAKE-UP EXAMS:
A student will be allowed to make up one exam during the semester only if s/he provides the instructor with written documentation in the form of
(a) a copy of a death certificate in the case of the funeral of a relative;
(b) a formal letter from a physician stating the medical reason for the absence;
(c) a formal letter from an employer or a commanding officer authorizing a business trip or military service;
(d) a formal letter from an attorney or an officer of the court verifying a court appearance.
No other excuses will be accepted - no exceptions!
The student must make up the exam within one week of its official date or else earn a zero. Any other missed exams will score as a zero.
EXTRA CREDIT: Extra credit will be available in the form of:
Puzzles due by 9 AM on Fridays, each worth 4 points. Click on the third button to view the latest Puzzle. New puzzles are given approximately every two weeks. You will submit your answers online to the IUPUI Webphysics server.
What is Physics Good For? due by 9 AM on Wednesdays, each worth 5 points. Click on the fifth button to view the latest "Good For." New Good Fors are given each month. You will submit your answers online to the IUPUI Webphysics server.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated -- Please take the following tutorial if you are unclear on how to recognize plagiarism.
